The Chair of the Board of Governors of Newcastle Primary School, Canon Ian Ellis, is delighted with the completion of a SEELB Minor Works project at the school.

He was commenting to Down News following an opening ceremony earlier this week (Tuesday 30th September), attended by SEELB Chief Executive Gregory Butler.

Canon Ellis, who is rector of St John’s church, Newcastle, and editor of The Church of Ireland Gazette newspaper, said that the school had been very fortunate to have the improvements made. He said: “The refurbishment of the school building entrance, a new reception area with new offices for the principal and secretary, and an extension to the back of the school which including an ICT suite and a Foundation Stage play and resource area is a very welcome improvement to the school”.

He paid tribute to the efforts of Principal Jenny McCann, adding: “The purpose of education is to bring out the full potential of children, to help them to flourish in their lives. It is also about a partnership between school staff, pupils and parents”.

At the ceremony there were performances by the school choir and the New Beginnings children’s choir from Uganda who were on tour in Northern Ireland.
