NI21 Mournes candidate Annette Holden has urged for extreme care and vigilance after the first local gorse fires at the weekend.
She said: “As we approach summer, Newcastle and the Mournes will see more visitors with families, youth groups and hikers visiting the area. The fire at the weekend covered 25 hectares of gorse land. Thankfully nobody has been hurt.
“Visibility and terrain obviously stopped the fire crews dealing with the blaze on Saturday night, but it was extinguished quickly on Sunday morning at first light.
“The blaze will act as a warning to everyone enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Mournes, not to start any gorse fires and to ensure their own and other people’s safety at all times,” she said.
