McMurray Joins Stormont Recall To Condemn Racism

We must work collectively to combat racism and intolerance, says McMurray, following Stormont recall

Alliance South Down MLA Andrew McMurray has said that there is no place in our society for racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia or hatred of any kind, following yesterday’s (8 August) Stormont recall.

MLAs voted unanimously in favour of an Alliance motion opposing recent disorder in Belfast and committing to tackling the misinformed, intolerant attitudes at the heart of the violence.

Mr McMurray has said: “I am incredibly proud to have taken a stand against the racism and intolerance that has been demonstrated on the streets of Northern Ireland over the last week.

“There is no place in our community for hate – for the xenophobia, racism or Islamophobia we have seen recently. My thoughts are with all those impacted by this targeted violence and intimidation. We stand with them.

“I also wish to extend this sentiment to those in my own constituency who are feeling scared and threatened. Please know that you are valued, welcomed, and are an integral part of our society.

“To those people who are genuinely confused, frightened, or even angry about immigration. Your anger is misdirected. The cause of hardship is lack of investment by the last British Government in public services and housing, and my constituency office is open to those who are having issues and difficulties on such matters.

“If people continue to be ‘othered’ because of the colour of their skin, their religion or ethnicity, then that is racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia. That cannot ever be legitimate and we need to work collectively to combat it.

“Finally, I want to thank all those individuals, groups and churches who go out of their way to help newcomers, migrants or refugees, settle in our society. This is the true reflection of the majority in Northern Ireland who overwhelmingly wish to welcome and show hospitality and generosity to newcomers.”
