Newry Mourne and Down District councillor Colin McGrath (SDLP) has called for an increase in police and council patrols at at Struell Wells, an important historical site, after reports of partying and anti-social behaviour.

Commenting the Downpatrick Councillor said: ‘There have been numerous reports of large gatherings taking place at the historical Struell Wells site near to Downpatrick.

“The site is home to some of the most important examples of healing wells in Ireland and for them to be destroyed by partying youths is unacceptable.

“I visited the site recently and saw first-hand examples of the partying, scorch damage to some of the walls of the Well buildings and spoke with some visitors to the site who said there was evidence most weekends of damage from those using the site inappropriately.

“I have contacted the PSNI, NIEA and local council Enforcement Officers to ask for a co-ordinated and joined up approach to protect this world class and important historical site.”
