Mason says Harry’s Place in Ballynahinch is credit to local community
Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason paid a visit to a local cafe set up to facilitate employment for people living with learning difficulties in the wider Ballynahinch area and beyond describing it as “extremely heartwarming”.
The South Down MLA said:
“It was an absolute pleasure to visit the team down at Harry’s Place in Ballynahinch earlier in the week.
“Listening to Gareth and David, the owners who set it up, their huge pride and commitment they have in the organisation is clear and how much it means to them to be able to offer this service.
“It was genuinely heart-warming to listen to the story behind the organisation and hear how it has grown into such a crucial service right in the heart of the community.
“Harry’s Place provides those who come, a place for social interaction, a place to build relationships and make friends while also offering employment to those with learning difficulties which can often prove very difficult.
“With over 40 members and growing, with some travelling from as far as Glengormley to make use of the services, its clear the impact Harry’s Place is having on people not just in the local area but beyond.
“Although making a huge difference to the lives of those who rely on the service, their families and those who have the privilege of visiting the cafe – the organisation faces huge pressures especially during this time of financial hardship.
“It is clear that the current provisions across South Down do not cater enough for the needs of adults and children with learning disabilities and other mental health challenges and more must be done to change that.
“Organisations such this prop up our health service and it is crucial that that they are adequately funded to enable them to continue providing their services across the community.”
Cathy Mason added: “Sinn Féin are committed to supporting our community and voluntary groups and ensuring people can access services that improve their mental and physical well-being.”
