A 48-year old man has been arrested on suspicion of seven offences including grievous bodily harm with intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (aoabh), possession of an offensive weapon and dangerous driving.
The arrest follows police receiving a report just after 11.10pm on Monday 7 September of a car cutting in front of another car, bringing it to a stop, in the Castlewellan Road area of Newcastle. It is then reported that a man got out of the car in front, smashed all the windows in the other car with a shovel and assaulted a 35-year old man, leaving him with a cut to his head.
Inspector Stinton said: “The 48-year old man was arrested just after 11.50pm in the Burren Meadow area of Newcastle. He currently remains in custody assisting police with their enquiries. A car has also been seized to assist in the investigation.”
