Police in Newcastle have arrested a man following the theft of alcohol from a grocery shop in the Castlewellan Road area of the town on 1 June.
Following a report from a member of the public that a man had run out of the shop with a number of bottles of alcohol with the security tags on them, police attended the scene and confirmed that a theft had occurred.
The member of the public had reported that the culprit had entered a house in the area so officers went to the property where they arrested a 28-year-old on suspicion of theft and recovered all of the stolen goods.
Commenting on the arrest, Sergeant Neil Wallace said: “This is a great example of the public and police working together. Thanks to the vigilant member of the public providing information to us, officers were able to respond and make an arrest.”
The male has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
