On Wednesday the 14 December, St Patrick’s Grammar school’s A- Level sports class will be hosting an Inter- schools’ Golf Development Day.
Laura Gardiner, event organiser, said: “This event will be of great benefit to the pupils in the first to third years from the De la Salle, Knock, St Patrick’s, St Mary’s and St Colmcille’s.
“Students will have the opportunity to gain invaluable skills from Ardglass Golf Club’s course professional Paul Vaughn in the morning session with a 9-hole competition in the afternoon. Ardglass Golf Club is a links course and has beautiful views of the coastline and the majesty of the Mourne mountains.
“The idea behind this event is to increase golf participation in schools and to acknowledge those students who play golf already. The game of golf has endless health benefits that are very often under-rated. Benefits of golf include: lowering stress levels, reduced risk of high blood pressure or a heart attack and diabetes. Through playing a 9-hole game it is said that you could burn 450 calories. Golf also has many social benefits and will open many doors for students in their future sports’ opportunities.
“We are very thankful to Ardglass Golf Club for letting us use their excellent facilities.
“The event is also going to be promoted by local sporting legends such as Cormac Sharvin and Kerry O’ Flaherty.
We would like to publicly thank our sponsors: Eddie Campbell Racing, Riverpark Training, St Patrick’s Parents and Friends Association and Lavery’s Bar Belfast. Without these sponsors this event would have not been able to take place.”
