Slieve Croob Independent Councillor Patrick Clarke has welcome a written Ministerial response from the Enterprise Minister following the continuing problem of poor mobile phone coverage in the Dundrum and Ballykinlar areas and has also welcomed modernisation works carried out to improve the reliability of mobile phone service in these areas.
He has been concerned about the continued very poor O2 mobile network coverage currently being experienced by O2 customers in the Dundrum and Ballykinlar areas and subsequently raised the matter with both 02, OFCOM and the Enterprise Minister following a series of complaints from constituents in recent days about poor 02 mobile reception problems and loss of 3G.
He said: “I welcome the written response received from the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment to me who has advised that 02 has now confirmed that there was optimisation work carried out to the sites in the Dundrum and Ballykinlar in early November.
“As a result of these works in those areas may have resulted in temporary issues for customers. This work was completed as part of their £3bn network modernisation plan which is seeking to improve and increase signal strength and improve coverage across the UK by the end of 2017.
“The Enterprise Minister further advises me that his officials have subsequently been in touch with 02 regarding the difficulties I raised and are advised that following further visits to six sites serving the Dundrum and Ballykinlar areas, engineers have confirmed that there are currently no network issues and that coverage is running normally.”
