O’Dowd announces £350,000 road improvement scheme for A25 Church Street, Downpatrick
Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has announced that a £350,000 carriageway and footway resurfacing scheme on A25 Church Street in Downpatrick will commence on Monday 3 June 2024.
The scheme has been jointly funded with the Department for Communities (DfC) who have made a significant contribution of £275,000 to the project as part of their regeneration plans for Downpatrick town centre.
The scheme will involve asphalt resurfacing and footway refurbishment of a 250 metre stretch of Church Street from the Strangford Road roundabout to Pillar Lane junction.
This will contribute significantly to improving and modernising the quality of the public realm at a key gateway into Downpatrick town centre.
To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme it will be necessary to implement daytime narrow lane restrictions from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday, from Monday 3 June to Friday 5 July 2024.
On street parking will be restricted along the extent of the works and the public may encounter slight delays as a result.
The resurfacing works will also require night-time road closures between 19:00 and 06:00 Monday to Friday.
Dates for these closures are yet to be finalised and a further update will be issued nearer the time.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience.
However, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access and Translink bus and school services throughout the scheme, road users should expect some delays.
Therefore they are advised to allow additional time when travelling and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works are expected to be substantially complete by Friday 5 July 2024, however, the department will keep the public informed of any change to this date.
There will also be extensive environmental improvements along Church Streetas part of the DfC plans with seating floral features including trees, and improved signage etc.
