Sinn Féin South Down MLA Chris Hazzard has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Regional Development (DRD) that a full Drainage Area Study has been given the green light for Annsborough village.
However, the local MLA has called on agencies involved to ensure the underlying problem is quickly identified and a permanent solution implemented as soon as possible.
Mr Hazzard said: “The Flood defence wall constructed by Rivers Agency in recent years has been a great asset in preventing widespread flooding in Annsborough village during recent flash floods.
“There persists a number of issues with stormwater and infiltration in the village sewerage network that is putting a small number of homes at risk of flooding.
“I’m aware that permanent solutions may be complex and incur a significant cost to DRD, but local residents must be protected from this awful experience every time there is heavy rainfall.”
Mr Hazzard added: “I have also been given assurances from the DARD Minister Michelle O’Neill that Rivers Agency will complete a programme of inspections and maintenance of all watercourses in the area, including a full programme of upgrading culverted water courses and grilled inlets.”
