Sinn Féin’s Chris Hazzard MLA has welcomed confirmation from Justice Minister David Ford that Downpatrick Courthouse will definitely not be included in a sweeping range of closures throughout the North’s Courts’ Estate.
Mr Hazzard added: “Having made repeated representations on behalf of local legal firms and the town’s hospitality sector – both of whom rely heavily on Downpatrick courthouse for healthy business; I am delighted that Downpatrick Courthouse will now not be closing.
“Following tonight’s announcement I’ve now asked the Minister to explore ways in which we can invest in upgrading facilities at Downpatrick in the years ahead.
Mr Hazzard added: “This is welcome news for local businesses in Downpatrick; I hope now we can build upon this in years ahead as we continue to make the case for recognition of our unique rural needs.”
