Sinn Féin’s South Down MP Chris Hazzard has welcomed the installation of a new pedestrian crossing and associated resurfacing scheme in Hilltown.
He said: “During my time as Minister I was delighted to be able sign-off on this proposal so it is great to see it installed and ready for use.
“With more than 8,000 vehicles using this road daily it is essential we get the balance right between the safety of pedestrians and progression of vehicles… this new crossing will help enormously.”
Sinn Féin local area representative Gerry O’Hare also welcomed the scheme adding: “For many years now locals have been campaigning for a pedestrian crossing so the installation of this road safety equipment is a great boost for the local community.
“It is also fantastic that the Puffin crossing utilises smart technology to ensure ease of use for elderly and vulnerable pedestrians.
“I want to thank Roads department officials for the successful completion of works in Hilltown in recent months.
“Both the installation of this crossing and the associated resurfacing works are greatly appreciated by local residents and commuters alike.”
