To borrow a phrase from some well known Songwriters ” It was twenty years ago ” that Glasdrumman’s Scor na nOg Ballad Group collected medals in the South Down Final writes Tony Bannon.
Representing the Club on that momentous occasion were : Donna Feeney, Lisa and Kelly O’Neill and Helena Trimble. Fast forward to Sunday evening in St.Mark’s Warrenpoint Donna Feeney who was mentoring this year’s Ballad Group was delighted to see history repeat itself as Niamh Mc Dowell, Tara Grant, Orla Smith and Ciara Rooney collect their medals as Runners up in a very highly talented section of singers and musicians.
Glenn won the South Down Title, but the girls go through to County Final in St. Colman’s College Newry on Sunday 30th November . The standard of the Final was very high in all sections and everyone attending the evening’s entertainment ,certainly , got their money’s worth. Glasdrumman had a great level of support in the hall and it is a credit to the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm put in by Niamh, Tara, Orla and Ciara that they deserve their place in the County Final . The Club is extremely proud of all their efforts and would like to thank their parents for being so understanding and cooperative with the mentors in organising and assisting with the rehearsal schedule.
Donna, Joanne and I, as mentors, are grateful to be working with such a talented and receptive group of young people and are proud that they will be representing our Club as a result of their hard work and demonstrating that practice does pay off. We are ,also, very thankful for all the support the group have received ,at all stage of the competition , from the families and Club members .
We thank Glasdrumman A.O.H for the use of the hall for rehearsals and to our own Club Committee for the great support we have had from all of them. Credit is also due to the members of the Scor Committee from South Down, County Cultural Officer Paula Magee and County Vice Chairman William James Smith for the continuing support and vigorous promotion of all things Scor. On a personal note may I thank Anita Brannigan and the Scor Committee for the invitations to be “Fear an Ti ” not only at the heat in Glasdrumman but also to fulfil the same role in the South Down Final and to the Clubs who took part on both nights and the mentors for all their kindness, support and cooperation Look forward to seeing a great turnout next week to support the Group in St.Colman’s Newry.
