Giants Get That Friday Feeling With Star Showing
The Stena Line Belfast Giants returned to their winning ways on Friday night in Scotland – defeating the Dundee Stars 4-2. The Giants responded well following home defeats this week against Sheffield and Cardiff.
Goals from Ward, Hamilton, Smotherman and Wronka gave the Giants an important away win and they now sit in third place with 28 points from 23 games, two points behind the Sheffield Steelers in first place with 30 points from 25 games. Shane Owen started in the Belfast net, posting 21 saves, with the Giants missing Kevin Raine.
Both sides started Friday’s Elite League game well with both Shane Owen in the Belfast net and Dundee’s Alex Leclerc called into action. Leclerc was particularly busy as the Giants outshot the Stars 12-6 and forced the Dundee defence into an impressive penalty kill.
Then the game sparked to life when the Giants broke the deadlock little over the game’s halfway mark – with Brian Ward firing past Leclerc, assisted by Bobby Farnham, at 31:49.
The Stars drew level 74 seconds later with Jordan Cownie finding Drydn Dow who slotted home at 33:03.
The visitors regained the lead at 36:03 when Pat Mullen’s pinpoint pass was turned home by Curtis Hamilton at the back post.
Belfast were firmly in control of the game and they extended the lead right att he end of the middle period. With the puck bobbling around the crease, Jordan Smotherman took full advantage and finished well at 39:25, assisted by Curtis Leonard.
The Giants got their final period off to the best possible start when Patryk Wronka pounced on Ryan Lowney’s perfect pass at 53:31.
However the Stars made it a two goal game yet again thanks to Drydn Dow’s second of the night, firing home the rebound at 54:12.
Final Score: Dundee Stars 2-4 Stena Line Belfast Giants
Giants Player of the Game#2 Pat Mullen (2 Assists)
Next up for the Giants is Sunday in Belfast with an Elite League clash against the Glasgow Clan, face-off 4pm at The SSE Arena.
