The Castlewellan Show is celebrating its fiftieth year.
At a special reception held in Denvir’s Coaching Inn in Downpatrick, officials past and present, members and organisers gathered to mark the occasion.
The reception was hosted by the Chairperson of Newry Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick, to recognise the outstanding work that the Castlewellan Show has done over the past fifty years in organising a prestigous event which attracts visitors from far and wide.
Speaking at the reception, Cllr Fitzpatrick said: “The Castlewellan Show has come a long way in the past fifty years, having developed into a fantastic day. It is without doubt an exemplar model for other community organisations to imitate as they endeavour to become as successful as you are.
“Newry Mourne and Down District Council are delighted to be associated with this wonderful show which has grown to become one of the premier shows across Ireland, now attracting many national and international visitors to our district.
“I would like to applaud the efforts of the show committee who without them the show would not take place. They work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the show is a resounding success.”
Cllr Fitzpatrick added: “One of the Council’s objectives is to become one o the premier tourism destinations on the island of Ireland. The Castlewellan Show has certainly promoted tourism in this district, and the committee have excelled in attracting support from farmers, the business community and spectators alike through their varied programme of events. The Council is indebted to your efforts in this regard. It is events such as the Castlewellan Show that helps our Council to achieve this objective.
“Finally, I would once again like to congratulate you, the Committee, on your success to date, wishing you all the very best with this year’s programme and offer you the support of Newry Mourne and Down District Council in delivering this renowned show for our community.”
Fiona Patterson, the show chairperson was on hand to welcome the Councillor Fitzpatrick and in her address she thanked everyone for their continue support and sponsorship to the show. She added: “I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the show on the 15 July.
“The Castlewellan Show is a fantastic family day out, and there is something there for all the country life enthusiasts from livestock judging, horse jumping, the many stalls, craft and food tents, the home industries and much much more.
“It really is a full day out with so much to do and see amidst the great scenery of Castlewellan Forest Park. Each year many people meet up again with old friends and family members and just enjoy the day. We hope to make this year a little bit more special given it is our fiftieth anniversary, so once again come hail or shine, the show will go on on Saturday 15 July.
“And don’t forget to bring your wellies. Just in case it rains!”
Council Chairperson Gillian Fitzpatrick also presented Fiona Patterson with a magnificent crystal bowl on behalf of the Council to mark the fiftieth anniversary.
