Newry Mourne and Down District Council is getting ready to spread some Christmas magic with Switch On events happening across the district from 23 November until 8 December 2017.
Council Chairperson Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said: “The Christmas Lights Switch On events in Newry and Downpatrick will officially mark the start of the Festive Season in the district. I encourage everyone to attend the events to get into the Christmas mood.
“Newry will be a hub of activity in the Event Space at Marcus Square, Hill Street from 5pm on Thursday 23 November as the area hosts the Christmas Lights Switch On. A Santa Fun Run will take place at 5.30pm and the winner will be announced just in time for Santa’s arrival at 6.45pm followed by a pyrotechnic display.
“Downpatrick is looking forward to welcoming large crowds in St Patrick Square on Friday 25 November from 5pm. The Enchanted Lantern Parade returns to kick off the celebrations led by Santa and his reindeer.
“The Parade will start from Down County Museum and will make its way through English Street, Market Street to finish at St Patrick Square to join in the Christmas celebrations.
“Santa will be switching on the lights at 7.15pm. Keep your eyes peeled for the abseiling elves as they make their way down the Saint Patrick Centre to watch the fireworks display.
“We hope everyone enjoys the free amusements, inflatables, face painting, arts and crafts workshops, balloon modellers and other activities in both Newry and Downpatrick.
“Across the district there will also be Christmas Lights Switch On events in Crossmaglen on 24 November, Newcastle and Kilkeel on 25 November, Warrenpoint on 2 December and Ballynahinch on 8 December,” added Cllr Mulgrew.
