“In more recent times, we have introduced Libraries NI to a local businessman that may be able to offer Libraries NI a solution to its accommodation problems. Whilst it is early days, I am confident that the decision of Libraries NI will allow this option to be explored to its fullest extent. I remain hopeful for the future of Killyleagh Library and will continue to do all within my power to save Killyleagh Library”. "][/caption] Simon Hamilton MLA paid tribute to the dedication of the Save Killyleagh Library campaign. He said, “It has been absolutely tremendous how the community in Killyleagh has rallied behind its library. I can remember meeting in the Bridge Centre with about 20 others when the Save Killyleagh Library campaign was kick-started.From that night on, the dedication of those behind the campaign has been extremely impressive. “I am in no doubt whatsoever that without their efforts, we wouldn’t have received this reprieve but would instead be facing the closure of Killyleagh Library for good. I know too that the Friends of Killyleagh Library will now work hard to produce substantive proposals that can secure Killyleagh Library. Given the endeavours to date, we have every reason to be confident for the future”, said Hamilton. Rowallane Councillor Billy Walker has said that the effort to save Killyleagh Library for the long term will continue. Cllr Walker said, “There is still work to be done to secure Killyleagh Library’s future. Not just in terms of developing a sustainable plan or securing improved accommodation perhaps on another site in the town which is something that is actively being investigated. But also in respect of maintaining membership and borrowing. “The community in Killyleagh have responded really positively to the threat to their library. They need to maintain this interest. I alongside Jim and Simon have brought Libraries NI and a local developer together. This option could provide the new building that is so badly needed. We know that this issue is critical to the future of the library and will make sure it is focused upon in the weeks and months ahead. “I would like to pay tribute to the work that Clive Scoular, Alan Bucknall and Joan McCrum have done over the past year. They have been admirable to their campaign and in running a number of events. Without their efforts this campaign would not have been possible.”]]>
