DUP representatives visited the site of the 11th July bonfire in Dundrum following allegations made in the media by Sinn Fein’s Willie Clarke.
Councillor Glyn Hanna said: “Our visit to the De Courcy Way area of Dundrum painted a very different picture to that which Willie Clarke outlined in the media. This bonfire appears to be a very peaceful community event which brings in people from the wider area.
“They enjoy an evening with their families and they take great pride in the fact that their community works together to fund activities, arrange the event and clean up afterwards. Having visited the site just one month after the bonfire I was impressed to see the freshly sown grass growing and the area looking well, with the play park perfectly safe and in perfect condition.
“My colleague Councillor William Walker is the DUP representative on the Council’s bonfire liaison committee so the people of Dundrum can be assured that we have representation there which will be working hard.”
Diane Forsythe, who stood in the past Westminster election for the DUP, said: “The DUP team will be standing strong with the Dundrum residents and their bonfire. We fully support of the true and fair representation of the Dundrum bonfire, the exaggeration and sensationalising reports are not helpful to anyone and only increase tensions unnecessarily. The Dundrum bonfire has complied with Police and Fire Authority regulations.”
