A woman in her seventies has died in a house fire in Downpatrick in Bridge Street.
The alarm was raised at 6.35am on Saturday 25 August and the NI Fire and Rescue Service rushed to her home in vain. A police spokesman said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire, and that the woman’s identity has been withheld as a request from the family for privacy reasons.
SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has offered her sympathies to the family of the woman who died the fire.
Ms Ritchie said: “I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the lady who lost her life in this morning’s fire. I cannot begin to imagine the shock and pain they are experiencing, but they can be assured of the community’s support.
“I also wish to pay tribute to those members of the emergency services who fought so valiantly to extinguish the blaze and save the woman. I know their efforts are always appreciated.
“My thoughts and prayers are with all those involved.”
