Rossglass County faced a stronger Downpatrick side hungry for goals
Newcastle and District Amateur Football League,
Premier Division, League Match,
Ballyhornan, 25th November,
Rossglass County 1 13 Downpatrick FC.
Rossglass and Downpatrick played out this league clash at Ballyhornan and the game was effectively over within the first 15 minutes as Downpatrick raced into a 3-0 lead writes Cyril McKinney.
Right from the first whistle Downpatrick swarmed all over Rossglass and forced them into errors and misplaced passes and went ahead on 3 minutes through their left winger Anthony Carson with a smart finish.
Forward Sean Duggan added a second on 11 minutes with a fine finish after some good interlinking play down the right wing.
It got worse for Rossglass three minutes later when Josh Montgomery beat the Rossglass keeper Ben McKibben from outside the box with a great right footed curler.
Try as they might, Rossglass could not get a foothold in the game as Downpatrick played some slick football with McCoubrey, Montgomery and Duggan pulling the strings.
Rossglass had their keeper to thank for keeping the scoreline down but on 27 minutes Montgomery got his second goal and his team’s 4th via a deflection of the unfortunate Kearney sending the keeper the wrong way.
The goals kept coming for Downpatrick through Carson on 29 minutes, then Duggan on 32 minutes, McCoubrey on 43 minutes and then Dugganon 44 minutes to leave it 8-0 to Downpatrick at the break.
Rossglass rallied briefly at the start of the second half and Adam Jennings pulled one back on 51 minutes from close in but any slim hopes of a recovery were extinguished by cool finishes from Montgomery on 55 minutes and again on 57 minutes before Dylan Kelly scored on 60 minutes.
Jake Harding cut in from the left wing and drilled a low shot to the back of the net from the edge of the box on 63 minutes before Kelly scored from the spot on 83 minutes to complete the scoring.
It is hard to take any positives from this game from a Rossglass perspective, but to their credit they continued to try and play the game in a sporting fashion, but Downpatrick were relentless with their passing game which stretched Rossglass all over the pitch.
Downpatrick chased and harried the opposition into submission and Rossglass were glad to hear the final whistle.
