DOWN Community Transport recently hosted a celebration event to recognise the invaluable contribution volunteers make to the organisation.
In the recent  Volunteers’ Week celebrated internationally, Down Community Transport in conjunction with Eclipse Cinema Downpatrick were keen to acknowledge the important role that volunteers play within the local community.
Janette Bradshaw, Volunteer co-ordinator at Down Community Transport said:Â “We have recruited 40 social car volunteers from Down District, Ards and North Down who use their own cars to take individuals living in isolated, rural communities to hospital and health appointments. There are eight members of the Board who volunteer their time and services in addition to volunteers who carry out administrative and promotional duties.
“This year alone, our social car volunteers have carried out 444 hours of their time, completed 649 trips and covered over 10,000 miles ferrying vulnerable individuals to very important appointments which can be a stressful time for them without worrying about transport.”
The celebration event held at Eclipse Cinema involved training in Passenger Assistance, a presentation of certificates, refreshments provided by Down Museum followed by a screening of The Great Gatsby movie.
“Our volunteers enable us to extend and compliment our service,” added Janette. “We are forever indebted to each and every one of them. They provide a very important personal service and are very committed to the volunteer role they carry out on our behalf. We are particularly thankful to the management of Eclipse cinema and the Burrendale Hotel Newcastle for their support throughout the year. Business support for our services is very much appreciated.”
