In the latest newsletter of the Cumann Gaelach Leath Chatail, for the Lecale Gaelic Society, a key issue of the naming of local streets and places was the centrepiece article explaining how this could be achieved through working with the new Newry Mourne and Down District Council.
It said: “Opportunity to have streets in Irish. Newry Mourne and Down District Council’s language policy provides the opportunity for residents to have street and road names officially recognised bilingually.
[caption id="attachment_59723" align="alignleft" width="304"] The Lecale Gaelic Society newsletter explains how you can get your street named in Irish along with the English version.[/caption]“Should a resident wish to have his or her street name adopted in Irish, they need only write to the Council to re- quest the same. On receipt of the a letter asking for such recognition, the Council will conduct a survey and will erect Irish signage if the survey results in a simple majority in support of it.
“The new Council has also erected Irish language signage throughout its offices. Irish language signage are testament to the cultural richness of the district and show that the community welcomes diversity. They help to normalise the use of the language in public.”
Deis sráidainmneacha a ghaelu
“Tugann polasaí sráidain- mneacha Comhairle an Iúir Mhúrn agus an Dúin deis don phobal aitheantas oifigiúil a bhaint amach dá shráid. Más main le duine ar bith sráid s’acu féin a ghaelú níl de dhíth ach litir a scríobh chuig an Chomhairle ar a lorg.
“Ar theacht an litir ag iarraidh a leithéid, déanfaidh an Chomhairle suirbhé ar an sráid. Glacfar le gaelú na sráide má tá tacaíocht le trom- lach simplí ann. Is féidir tuilleadh eolais a fháil ó Chumann Gaelach Leath Chathail.
“Tá comharthaí Gaeilge le feiceáil fud fad oifigí na Comhairle nua. Is dóigh iontach iad na comharthaí le taispeáint don phobal go bhfuil sai- bhreas sa phobal sa cheantar agus go gcuirte- ar fáilte roimh an éag- súlacht. Déanann siad úsáid na teanga a normalú.”
