[/caption]Councillor Clarke said: “I have lobbied Down District Council regarding the poor condition of the South Promenade, in Newcastle. The improvements will include new flower planting schemes, kerb replacement and new ornate street furniture, including new wrought iron seating, with a design which is sympathetic with the maritime heritage of the Newcastle Harbour area.”
“Other works include the resurfacing of the Harbours North pier, which is in the process of obtaining planning permission and resurfacing of the Bogie Hill, while acknowledging these are minor works in the context of the scale of the restoration work that is required, it begins the process of creating a brand for the Harbour area, The Old Town Quarter which would entail the area having a distinct style and colour of pathway surfacing, ornate street furniture and signage”
Councillor Clarke added: “These works will enhance the heritage of the area, which includes the medieval fish traps, Newcastle Harbour and Watch House,The Granite Trail, 1843 Newcastle Fishing disaster, site of Donard lodge, SS Great Britain anchor, Bloody Bridge and the World War 2 watchtower.”
