Mourne’s Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke has requested that Newry Mourne and Down District Council urgently carry out repairs at Islands Park Newcastle.
Cllr Clarke said: “As a regular walker in Islands Park, I have identified a number of issues that requires resolving in the park.
“These repairs include the need for asphalt repairs and drains to be installed in a number of pathways where pooling is occurring. This problem arises after periods of heavy rainfall which makes it difficult for users of the park to enjoy a walk.
“The public who use the Park have found the pathways inaccessible, and this problem has been exacerbated following the recent storms that have been endured. It is unacceptable that older citizens, mothers with children, some pushing prams, are forced off the path onto the grass to walk through mud to avoid the pools of water.
“Drainage and resurfacing of the asphalt in the car park at the tennis courts also requires an upgrade. And another issue I raised in relation to the Islands Park is the need for lighting to be installed. I acknowledge any lighting provision has to be sensitive to other users, which includes the Shimna Angling Club. In my opinion a cost effective solar powered low level lighting solution can be used.
“I will discussing the need for these essential improvements with Council officers. This park is very well used and the improvements will enhance the experience for visitors and locals alike,” added Cllr Willie Clarke.
