On Monday 25 April, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Mickey Ruane hosted a reception to honour the achievements of St Patrick’s GAC, Saul who were crowned All Ireland Scór Sinsear Champions in the Ballad Group Section, at the Finals on Saturday 2 April.
As first Citizen of Newry, Mourne and Down District, Chairperson Ruane expressed his pride and delight at the winners’ achievements, and added: “Saturday 2 April 2016 was a great day for our district as Saul GAC became All-Ireland Scór Sinsear Champions.
“I would like to commend the performers in the Ballad group, Gareth McGreevy, Angela McGreevy, Grainne Laverty, Caithlin Denvir and Catherine McGrath on the hard work and commitment they have put in to achieve this win at national level. I would also like to pay tribute to the families, mentors and club that made this great win possible.”
Councillor Ruane said: “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is the third largest of the eleven new Councils, with a population of around 171,500 and our Rural Communities and Clubs, such as those here tonight, are essential to the Council’s vision of a district where communities are cohesive, actively engaged and offer a good quality of life for the young and old. It is when we work together collaboratively and in partnership that we secure better outcomes for all.”
Those in attendance at the reception were treated to a performance from the winning act, which ended a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable evening.
