Sinn Féin councillor Willie Clarke has extended condolences to the family of Stephen Sweeney (19) following his death in a car accident early on Friday morning. The accident happened on the Ballagh Road area of Newcastle.
The Sinn Féin councillor for the area, Willie Clarke said: “The wider family circle all live fairly close together and I know the death of Stephen will have a very profound impact on everyone affected by it.
“I would have known Stephen from seeing him in the locality on a regular basis. He was someone who was friendly, and was by all accounts an exceptional boxer representing the All Blacks boxing club in Glasdrumman.”
Councillor Clarke added: “This accident is one which has once again highlighted the dangers on the local roads and the need for motorists to be extremely careful.
“I want to take this opportunity to extend my condolences and that of my party to the Sweeney family and wider family circle. They remain in our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.”
