Councillor Willie Clarke says main street flooding issue and Delaney Terrace numbering issue need to be resolved
Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke has welcomed the response from DFI Roads to a perennial flooding issue on Newcastle Main Street.
Cllr Clarke said: “There are three gullies along the Main Street that need an exploratory excavation to repair.
“One is beside Joyland, one at the Birch Café near Causeway Road junction, and one near the Base Café.
“DFI were holding off until the summer season was over before commencing these repairs and DFI Roads will be starting work shortly.
“The flooding issue is causing major inconvenience to shoppers, retailers and motorists using Newcastle Main Street.
The flooding problem is basically caused by three blocked drains on the right hand side of the main street on the southern side of the bridge.
This has been causing considerable problems in this area, however, this situation is now going to be resolved.
“It is causing drivers to swerve into the left hand lane to avoid the flooding, and pedestrians are being soaked while trying to access local businesses.
“I am pleased that works will now commence to resolve the flooding problem.
Delaney Terrace Needs Nameplate Says Clarke
Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke, has called for the installation of a nameplate at Delaney Terrace King Street which clearly show the numbers for ‘King Street’ in Newcastle.
“I have been contacted by residents from 163 to 177 King street as there is no number signage which would ensure the street known as Delaney Terrace is clearly identified as King Street Newcastle.
“I made representations to Newry Mourne and Down District Council highlighting the need for a nameplate with ‘King Street’ numbers at this location.
“There have been a number of incidents where emergency services have been unable to find addresses there at this location.
“And there has also been problems with deliveries at this location.
“I welcome that Council have ordered a new sign and it will be erected as soon as possible.”
