South Down SDLP MLA Seán Rogers has spoken out following a burglary in Castlewellan on Saturday evening.
Mr Rogers said: “I was shocked as the news broke on Saturday evening of the burglary of a pensioner’s home in Castlewellan. I understand that the couple, who are in their eighties, left to go to mass as usual and returned to their Newcastle Road home an hour or so later to find their house ransacked and items stolen.“This is deeply disturbing. For the assailants to know this couple’s routine is even more sinister.
“I would urge anyone with any information about Saturday’s incident to make contact with the PSNI immediately. We all deserve to be happy, secure and safe in our own home but even more so those who are older and have contributed so much to the fabric of the community My thoughts are with the couple and their family at this traumatic time.” Newcastle Councillor Laura Devlin said: “I know the couple and when I called with them on Sunday, they remained deeply upset by the evening’s events. This is a very well respected family who are an integral part of the community of Castlewellan and have been so for many years.“For anyone to have their home and personal space violated in such a way is totally unacceptable and must be condemned at the highest level.”
