Now that we are back in another lockdown, fast and reliable broadband speeds are again front of mind. With families at home and more people needing to connect multiple devices simultaneously to the internet, even the fastest current broadband speeds can struggle.

Openreach, Northern Ireland’s largest digital infrastructure provider, is currently building ultrafast Full Fibre broadband across the region.  With speeds available of up to 1000 Mbps the ultrafast Full Fibre broadband network can easily cope with multiple devices streaming, gaming and connecting to home schooling apps.

Michael Gaw, CFP lead at Openreach Northern Ireland alongside Leanne Watson and Matthew Murray, members of Openreach’s build team.

Through its Community Fibre Partnership initiative, Openreach is working together with communities that are not currently included in any private or publicly financed build plans to bring futureproof, ultrafast Full Fibre broadband to homes and businesses in the area.

Properties in the scheme are eligible for Government Gigbabit Vouchers which provide up to £3,500 for each SMEs, and up to £1,500 per residential premises to support the cost of installing new gigabit capable connections.

Residents and businesses can join the scheme by pledging their vouchers, which are then combined with a contribution from Openreach to create a fund which covers the cost of building the new infrastructure.

Openreach has two live CFP schemes running at the moment in Kircubbin and Greyabbey, which can make a real difference to residents on the Ards Peninsula.

In Kircubbin, 340 homes and businesses are eligible for the scheme while the scheme in Greyabbey is already well under way with more than 100 premises already signed up.

Strangford MP Jim Shannon is a supporter of the initiative and is urging all residents to come together and join the Community Fibre Partnership.

He said: “Residents and businesses in Kircubbin and Greyabbey are eligible for Government Gigabit Connectivity vouchers and if enough people in the communities pledge their vouchers, at no additional cost to them, then Openreach can build its ultrafast Full Fibre broadband network in the area.

“As the past year has shown us, fast, reliable broadband is vital to the functioning of our community. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to work from home, watch the latest TV series or even teach our children so I would really encourage the community to come together and help bring ultrafast Full Fibre broadband to the area.”
