Newcastle area Councillor Stephen Burns (Sinn Féin) has called for safety improvements to be made at the junction of the Burrenwood, Circular and Newcastle Roads in Castlewellan.
Cllr Burns said: “There had been a major issue regarding the safety of this junction for a number of years.
“The area in question is notorious for being an accident black spot and has been the cause of numerous road traffic collisions, varying in severity from minor to extremely serious. I myself was involved in a collision at this junction some 15 years ago, and in the time since simply no improvement has been made to the safety of the road.
“I have called on the Roads Service to investigate possible junction improvements that could be carried out to enhance driver safety in the area. Numerous local residents have contacted me concerned with the ever increasing number of collisions and safety improvements by Roads Service are well overdue.
“I look forward to hearing the Roads Service response on this matter and hope that any measures to improve safety can and will be carried out,” added Cllr Burns.
