Alliance MLA Patrick Brown Raises Concerns with DfI Minister Regarding Flooding At Stormont
Alliance MLA Patrick Brown addressed the Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd regarding flooding in South Down during last week’s Stormont Infrastructure Committee meeting.
The Minister presented his legislative programme for the term, covering topics such as water management, road infrastructure, and public transport.
Patrick Brown raised several questions including the ongoing review of the flooding in Downpatrick, further flood alleviation in flooded parts of Newcastle, and the Department’s guidance to local councils regarding planning decisions in flood-prone areas.
Additionally, he inquired about the Department’s stance on dredging the River Quoile to address toxic sludge buildup.
The South Down MLA said: “Keeping the issue of flooding in Downpatrick at the forefront of the Minister’s agenda is crucial.
“Effective flood defences and addressing the mismanagement of the Quoile River’s are paramount to preventing future flooding incidents.
“I will be eagerly awaiting the report from the ongoing review, scheduled for publication in June, and will urge the Minister to implement both short-term and long-term measures to mitigate flooding risks.”
He added: “I also sought clarification on the guidance provided to planning decision-makers for applications in flood-risk areas.
“And I also welcome confirmation from Newry Mourne and Down District Council that they will be hosting two ‘engagement sessions’ with local stakeholders, including businesses, residents and elected representatives, to feed into the ongoing flood review.
“These will take place on 27th March 2024 in Downpatrick Leisure Centre from 2pm to 5pm, and Newry Leisure Centre from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
“I would encourage anyone affected by flooding or concerned about future flood preparedness to attend these sessions and feedback to council officials.’
