Ards and North Down Councillor Joe Boyle has welcomed the announcement of the Henderson’s Group of a proposed investment in excess of £2million creating a Euro Spar in the centre of Portaferry.
The development will encompass buildings both in use and derelict within High Street and The Square along with associated car parking for over 30 vehicles.’
Councillor Boyle said: “This is an exciting announcement that will significantly transform this location in Portaferry and hopefully attract a greater foot fall from the rural communities throughout the Ards Peninsula.
“With this major store offering a greater range of products it will reduce the journeys to places such as Newtownards and Bangor with everything being now available practicably on your doorstep.
“It will also contribute significantly to reducing the expensive costs involved from both a monetary aspect and time involved of overall travelling to and from major towns. ‘
“Clearly the Henderson Group are confident and have put a lot of thought into the viability of such a significant investment and are therefore confident that their expectation on profitable returns in the future will be fully justified.
“As Chairperson of the Council’s Portaferry Public Realm Scheme involving Council Officers, Ards Peninsula Elected Members and stakeholders from the community, to have a £3.5m combined investment and enhancement programme earmarked within Portaferry is a much welcomed package.
“This new development will compliment the Market House having recently undergone a combined Council, Heritage Lottery Fund / Portaferry Regeneration Ltd package providing a £0.4m refurbishment which are all important pieces of the improvements in the town’s infrastructure for the benefit of residents and visitors to the area.”
