Attempted Robbery With Assault On Woman Beside Downpatrick Post Office

dn_screenA woman has sustained injuries to her head and neck following a failed robbery attempt in Downpatrick on Lower Market Street at around 9.30am  morning (Thursday 12 June).

A man approached the woman who was conducting her business in the Post Office besdide the Grove Shopping Centre and grabbed her handbag. He wrestled her to the pavement while the woman resisted but left empty handed.

She was taken to hospital with her injuries which are not thought to be life threatening. Police indicated that they were clear on how the injuries were sustained at this time.

A police spokesperson said that the attack was very concerning given that it was in broad daylight.

The detectives in Downpatrick are appealing for witnesses to the incident and anyone with information can call the police non-emergency number at 101 and ask for the detectives in Downpatrick or alternatively call the charity Crimestoppers 0800 555111.

There may be a possibility that the incident was captured on CCTV security footage.

SDLP Councillor Colin McGrath has said that the stabbing of a woman at a Post Office in Downpatrick is “a callous attack”. The Downpatrick councillor added: “’It appears that this attack was against a woman who was going about her business at the local Post Office.

“This type of attack in such a public place and during the day time in our Main Street is extremely worrying and totally reckless. My thoughts are with the victim and her family at this difficult time.

“I would call on anyone with any information to contact the PSNI immediately to have the perpetrator of this attack questioned as soon as possible.”
