Rowallane’s Alliance Councillor David Lee-Surginor, Alliance’s second candidate for Rowallane Tierna Kelly, and Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong visited Saintfield United’s club facility alongside other councillors for the DEA.

Alliance Candidates and MLA visit Saintfield United FC: Alliance Representatives, Tierna Kelly; Cllr David Lee-Surginor; and Kellie Armstrong MLA; with members of the Saintfield United FC staff.

Saintfield United; founded in 1972, is a cross-community football club. In 2019 the club developed a number of new facilities including a new pitch and car-park.

Local representatives were invited for a tour of the club’s current facilities and to hear about their future developments, such as refurbishment to the changing rooms, a multi-use games area, a new sheltered area for spectators and additional car-parking.

Speaking on the visit Alliance Councillor David Lee-Surginor said: “Thank you to the football club for taking the time to show us around their beautiful complex and playing fields.

“Tierna was able to highlight her own experience playing for teams throughout Rowallane and concern that girl/women football teams have been losing funding as of late.

“We will support the club’s future growth as we can all recognise the role sports play when it comes to improving mental health and general health and well-being for everyone in the Saintfield area and beyond.”

Tierna Kelly, Alliance’s candidate for local council in Rowallane said: “With such a fantastic amount of work and effort having gone into this space, and with more plans to follow, I’m incredibly excited to see how this project can develop and provide for the local Saintfield community.”

Alliance Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong said: “There are a number of amazing, modern and progressive development plans in store for Saintfield United. Now all we have to do is secure the funding needed.”
