Mourne area Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke has described the meeting held on Tuesday 2 June to discuss litter issues in the Castlewellan Road area of Newcastle as positive and constructive.
Cllr Clarke said: “County Down Rural Community Network organised the meeting to enable local Councillors, Housing Executive, APEX housing representatives, Newry, Mourne and Down Council enforcement officials and the Murlough Community, Burren Meadow, Castlewellan Road and Dunwellan resident groups to visit the area and identify solutions to a number of issues of concern, for the residents of the area.
“During the site meeting it was clear there were significant problems including fly tipping, graffiti and lack of maintenance in a number of estates; it was identified that contamination of blue bins, particularly in the communal areas of Dunwellan Park, increased the amount of litter, in the area, due to contaminated bins not being emptied, it was agreed the Housing Executive and Council officials will work in collaboration to endeavour to resolve this problem.
“There was agreement to follow up on a request for litter bins to be installed at strategic points on the Castlewellan Road, it is unacceptable that an area that has 2 supermarkets, SERC building, a-caravan park, a hotel, GAA facility and is a vast residential area, does not have a council bin.
“Other issues of concern included the need for a multi-agency approach to resolve anti-social behaviour in the play park grass area in the Burrendale Park, also residents raised concerns in relation to inadequate fencing of the park, the need for an improved maintenance schedule, which will deal with broken glass in the play park, and resolve the on-going problem with dog fouling, it is essential that the park is fit for purpose and is safe for children to play in. I will ensure these matters will be addressed by Newry, Mourne and Down Council,” added Cllr Clarke.
