Newtowards Jockey Rides First Winner At Clonmel

Jordan Canavan from Newtownards rode his first winner in Ireland on Friday when winning on Dontdooddson at Clonmel writes Joe Kavanagh.

Trained by Cork-based Robert Tyner he relegated the Ruby Walsh-partnered favourite Eight and Bob into second spot.

The local 21-year old was having his first ride back following injury when recording his first winner in Ireland.  Canavan now works for the Kinsale trainer having spent time with Jonjo O’Neill in Britain and riding a winner over fences at Chepstow (Clubs Are Trumps owned by JP Mc Manus).

His father John, a former trainer, is a regular at Down Royal acting as an assistant to the starter. Tyner said:  “Jordan is with us a couple of months now and is doing well. He was only passed to ride last week and it was good the opportunity came up for him.”

Jordan as a youngster was a regular at point-to-points galloping his pony around parts of the courses before he reached the age to obtain a jockey’s licence.

Jordan Canavan junior said: “ I was due to join Mr Tyner during the summer but had a fall at Galway.  He’s been very good to me and I’m delighted to reward him with a winner.”
