Cadets at Home on the Range

KEEN eyes and steady nerves paid off for sharp-shooting local Cadets who were competing in the annual Inter-Service Cadet Rifle Meeting at Magilligan.

Enjoying their success are, from left, Adam Smith, Ryan Shaw, Louise Orr and Luke Gelston.

The hot shots who train at the shooting ranges at Ballykinler claimed some of the most prestigious prizes in a tournament which is one of the most hotly contested events in the Cadet sporting calendar, attracting strong entries from right across Northern Ireland.xa0

Congratulating all those who stepped up to the mark to test their skills, Colonel Johnny Rollins MBE, Chief Executive of the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association Northern Ireland, said: “Rifle shooting is one of the most popular activities we offer within the Cadet movementxa0 with the result that we have large numbers of young people who have both the enthusiasm and the necessary skill to compete at this demanding level… so it really was a case of ‘shooting doesn’t get much tougher than this’!

“We have some excellent marksmen and women amongst our competitors, all showing the talent, discipline and control which are needed for success in this sport. It was good to see the results of hard work and regular practice and, what was just as impressive, was the spirit of sportsmanship which the young people demonstrated.”
