Killough FC 5 Downpatrick Athletic 1
Downpatrick Athletic suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of neighbours Killough. Having to field seven under nineteen’s due to the first team missing players, Downpatrick came up against a more physical and experienced team.
Killough’s first goal was rather fortuitous with Ronan Holland making a good save which then rebounded of the Killough forward and into the net. As much as the first goal was lucky the second goal was superb, Killough broke down the left wing before the left winger cut inside and from the edge of the box hit an unstoppable shot into the back of the net.
On the stroke of half time Killough scored their third, the ball was played up to the striker who held the ball up well before laying it back to Gareth George who placed the ball into the bottom corner giving Ronan Holland in the Downpatrick nets no chance. The third goal was a killer blow for Downpatrick who had started to get back into the game.
Half Time: Killough FC 3 v Downpatrick FC 0
Any hopes Downpatrick had of getting back into the game in the second half were gone within two minutes of the restart. A long high ball over the top evaded the Downpatrick defence the Killough winger cut inside before hitting an unstoppable shot from just outside the six yard box past the helpless Holland. Midway through the second half Killough made it five when a cross come shot found its way into the back of the net.
Downpatrick scored a consolation goal through Tony McIlhone. Ryan McCoubrey swung in a corner which caused confusion in the Killough defence and McIlhone was in the right spot to stab home the ball. This match will bring on the young Downpatrick players who will hope to have more experienced players back for next week’s game.
