The ease with which digital content can be shared online, in addition to its many benefits, has created a host of problems for today’s young people.
Wayne Denner, who has cemented his reputation as a leading youth speaker in Ireland, the UK and the UAE, has launched his book ‘The Student’s Guide To An Epic Online Reputation ...And Parents Too’ in a bid to help young people tackle the complexities of the internet, make best use of social media and use it to their advantage.
The social media good practice guru said: “What we post and share online can impact our reputation for years – most of it is irreversible. It is vital young people get serious about protecting their online reputation if they want to get ahead in jobs and life opportunities.

The book is also essential reading for parents, teachers and other professionals who work with young people. Readers can expect to learn which apps teenagers are using, how they use them and how safe and secure these apps really are. The world is changing for young people seeking jobs and one compromised photograph or post online, really can have devastating results for that young person.”
The book reflects Wayne’s popular upbeat style, and with 18 years of experience in the social media landscape, and having set up Ireland’s first ever social media website, Wayne’s message to readers is clear; reputation can be damaged in a matter of seconds and young people especially need to take time to think before they post.
‘The Student’s Guide To An Online Epic Reputation..And Parents Too’ comes at a time when college and job recruiters are increasingly taking to social media sites to vet candidates. A study by Time magazine found 93% of hiring managers will now review a candidate’s social media profile before making a hiring decision. Naturally, an employer will choose to not hire someone whose ‘digital dirt’ could potentially damage the reputation of its own organisation.
”I’ve spoken to thousands of parents, teachers and young people in schools over the past three years. This is the first generation of parents to have to deal with these issues and the understanding that their child’s social media use will affect the college or university they get into and the job they get.” said Wayne.
Yachtswoman and former founder of Safer World Training, Tracy Edwards MBE said: “For young people today, their online profile is their CV, Wayne’s book is an absolute must read for every generation.”
Wayne added: “When empowered, young people can create opportunities, land jobs, move up the career ladder and build positive relationships online, but when used ineffectively, or worse wrongly, implications can prove very costly to a young person as well as to their family ”.
Dr Anne Rice academic and parent of five children (three of which are teens) added that there is a wealth of useful information in this book. She warned that “due to the fast pace of technology parents are always playing catch up to their children’s online lives.
However, being equipped with this book and the knowledge it presents does two things. It enhances parenting in the digital age and empowers parents to safeguard and improve their children’s future employment opportunities. That done we can help our young people navigate through the vast opportunities that currently exist online”.
Parents and educators are already praising the book. Parent Aine Bermingham from Fermanagh, said: “I just finished The Student’s Guide last night and passed it on to my daughter. Highly recommended!”
Teacher and father Adam Welch from West Yorkshire said “Great tips and ideas for teenagers and parents. I’ve been banging on about this for a while to my daughter but now she’s seen it in print she’s starting to believe me.”
