Proposal to ring-fence agri support budget is a major win for UFU
The Ulster Farmers’ Union is celebrating a major win for the local farming community following confirmation by Finance Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald, that the NI Executive has proposed to ring-fence and protect the future agricultural support budget for future years.
This landmark decision underscores the critical importance of agriculture to Northern Ireland and reflects the powerful impact of the collective voice of local farmers.
UFU president William Irvine said: “This is a real victory for our members and the wider farming community. On Monday 18 November, over 6,500 farmers and supporters gathered at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, rallying against the changes to both agriculture support in the Autumn budget and Agricultural Property Relief.
“The strength and sheer determination of our farming industry was undeniable, and it was a historical moment to have the support of all political parities in NI.
“The outcome by our NI Executive, proposing to now have the future agricultural support budget ring-fenced, shows what can be achieved when we are united in delivering a clear and consistent message.”
The announcement by the Finance Minister also confirmed an additional allocation to the agriculture budget. While this is encouraging, the UFU awaits further details on how this funding will be utilised and what it will mean for farm businesses.
Mr Irvine added: “While it is disappointing that the budget does not take into consideration inflation, having a proposal to ring-fence the agri budget is a significant and positive step forward.
“NI is the only devolved region in the UK so far, to have secured a proposal from its local Executive to ring-fence the agricultural support budget, highlighting the unique importance of farming to the region’s economy, environment and food security.
“It also reflects the value that local government places on agriculture which is extremely uplifting.
“We are committed to working with the Finance Minister, DAERA Minister and other stakeholders to ensure that this funding delivers maximum benefit for the farming community while continuing to address the challenges and opportunities facing the sector”.
