The SDLP’s newest councillor on Newry Mourne and Down Council has said that he delighted to be following in the footsteps of his mother and grandfather’s public service.
John Trainor was selected to fill the vacancy left by Colin McGrath who was elected to the Assembly in the May election.
John said: “I feel very privileged to have been selected to fill Colin McGrath’s seat on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. I have been truly overwhelmed by the support from the party and from the local community since my selection. I hope to repay all those who’ve shown faith in me.
“It is also a great honour to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather Sean Quinn and mother Anne Trainor who both served as representatives on the old legacy Down District Council. A record of public service runs deep in my blood and I hope to live up to the high standard they both set serving the great community in Downpatrick and the greater Lecale area.
“Colin and his predecessors have left a huge legacy. There are significant challenges ahead for our communities but I hope to meet those, with the support of local people and with our excellent team of councillors. It’s a great honour to be part of that team.”
