The Assessment of Performance 2022-23 was approved by the Newry Mourne and Down District Council’s SPR Committee
Newry Mourne and Down District Council’s Assessment of Performance 2022-23 was considered and approved by the Strategy, Policy and Resources Committee on Thursday 14 September 2023.
The Chairperson of the Strategy, Policy and Resources Committee, Councillor Leeanne McEvoy said: “I am pleased to present this year’s Assessment of Performance.
“2022-23 has been another challenging year where we continued to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic whilst also dealing with a cost of living crisis.
“The Assessment of Performance has given us an opportunity to reflect on how we have worked through the past year, the achievements we should be proud of and the areas for improvement we need to continue to focus on”.
The Assessment of Performance highlights where progress has been made over the past year.
The Council statement continued that the organisation has worked tirelessly to deliver services and ensure they were delivered seamlessly for residents across our district.
Through a range of economic development programmes, the Council supported 359 local businesses and social enterprises and helped to create 187 new jobs.
More people than ever continued to re-connect with the natural beauty of Newry Mourne and Down by visiting the wonderful outdoor spaces on their doorstep.
The Council recording 226,153 visits to Warrenpoint Municipal Park, 225,795 visits to community trails and 81,279 visits to the Carlingford Lough Greenway.
Through the Financial Assistance Scheme, the Council continued to support community groups by awarding £1.26M towards 366 local projects.
As the Council continues to recover from the pandemic, many of the services have displayed signs of improvement.
Council’s leisure services recorded:
- a 79.8% increase in recorded attendances compared to 2021-22,
- a decrease in the number of litter and dog fouling incidents of 47%, from 460 in 2021-22 to 245 in 2022-23,
- and a decrease in the level of municipal waste sent to landfill from 2,685 tonnes in 2021-22 to 2,314 tonnes in 2022-23.
The Council said it will continue to work to drive continuous improvements in the delivery of its services for the benefit of residents in the district.
Through the Corporate Plan 2021-23 and Performance Improvement Plan 2023-24, the Council will focus on what matters most to local residents.
This involves improving the quality of life for all local communities and building a district local residents can all be proud of.

This self-assessment of performance forms part of the Performance Audit and Assessment which is carried out by the Northern Ireland Audit Office on an annual basis.
