Downpatrick area Councillor Gareth Sharvin (SDLP) has called for a joined-up approach by the Department of Environment and Regional Development, to address the high level of erosion taking place along Ballyhornan beach.
Cllr Gareth Sharvin said: “I have received a high volume of calls from concerned local residents. The concerns highlighted to me ranges from the safety of the beach due to the landslides, the impact the erosion is having on the hillbank and the impact it is having to the safety of the road.
“This is an area I highlighted to Transport NI back in 2015. The then response I received was that a half-yearly assessment was put in place to monitor the level of erosion occurring. I have asked to see the outcomes of those reports.
“I have written to both Minister Mark H Durkan and Minister Michelle McIllveen to get their support in addressing the continuing erosion at Ballyhornan beach.
Councillor Sharvin added: “It is vitality important that both Ministers sign up in tackling this issue, as the matter involves both departments. We must put controls in place now before it is too late. I will continue to convey residents concerns to both Ministers and press for Stormont support.”
