South Eastern Regional College (SERC) recently hosted a presentation ceremony for students who have completed the Driving to Success programme.
Driving to Success is a joint programme between SERC and the Downpatrick Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership and is funded by the Department for Social Development (DSD).
The local project aims to support unemployed people from neighbourhood renewal areas by providing an opportunity for them to gain qualifications in areas including Hospitality, Health and Social Care and ICT.
Students also benefited from free driving lessons with David Blair School of Motoring with many of the participants successfully passing their driving test.
The ceremony was opened by Driving to Success Project Officer Tatiana Seed who said: “Driving to Success is clearly beneficial as the programme has helped participants tackle their employment barriers, gain qualifications, gain valuable work experience and significantly enhance their opportunity for employment.
“Many students have emphasised that participation in the programme helped them to build their confidence, gain new skills and boosted their self-esteem and motivation. They would recommend the project to others who want to improve their lives and make a positive change.”
Students and guests were greeted by Downpatrick Campus Manager and Programme Manager Paul Walsh who congratulated all of those who had passed the programme. Project participant Sarah Houston also gave a speech on behalf of the students. Sarah gave an inspiring speech describing how the programme has been beneficial and successful for herself and her peers.
Local representatives attended the presentation, including Ann Grant, Community Development Officer, County Down Rural Community Network, Katrina Hynds, DEA Co-Ordinator (Downpatrick) and Raphael Crummy, Development Manager, Community Empowerment Division, Department for Communities Downpatrick.
Certificates where presented by Raphael Crummy and Tatiana Seed to all those who attended.
