A great opportunity lies ahead for a number of third level trained graduates to break into a career in Information Technology.
a group of Employment and Learning Minister Dr. Stephen Farry has announced funding for 120 training opportunities in Software Development.
The Professional Software Development course which will commence in September 2014 aims to provide HND, degree or equivalent graduates in non- IT disciplines with the skills and experience required to take up exciting new opportunities in the IT industry.
The programme comprises 17 weeks of classroom based learning delivered by all six Northern Ireland regional colleges including SERC’s Lisburn campus.
The Minister said: “The ICT Skills Action Plan challenges Government to help match the skills of the workforce with the skills our employers need. The Software Professional Course is an excellent example of how we are doing exactly that.
“The ICT sector is the driving force of a globally competitive economy, underpinning innovation, competitiveness and long term prosperity. It is imperative that we support this sector locally to enhance the quality of our workforce, maximise employment opportunities and give our businesses a competitive edge in the global marketplace.”
SERC Principal and Chief Executive Mr Ken Webb said: “The programme provides an excellent opportunity for HND or degree graduates who are struggling to secure employment within their chosen discipline to retrain and up-skill in a niche function within a thriving industry.
“The results of the course to date have been excellent, with a success rate of 95 per cent and trainees from diverse academic backgrounds securing employment in software development. I would encourage any unemployed graduate to consider a career in the vibrant and growing local ICT sector.”
