South Eastern Regional College have been nominated in two categories at Action Mental Health’s Headfirst Awards which took place at W5 to coincide with World Mental Health Day on Wednesday 10 October.
This year the global theme for the day is ‘Young people and mental health in a changing world’.
The awards aim to recognise and celebrate the contribution made by local schools, colleges, organisations and individuals, in supporting the mental health of children and young people.
Downpatrick Campus Manager Paul Walsh has been nominated in the ‘Championing Young People’s Mental Health’ category.
Meanwhile SERCs Human Resources Department has been nominated in the ‘Commitment to Well-being for the Community’ category.
To demonstrate the College’s commitment to looking after the emotional and physical wellbeing of students, SERC has signed up to the Mental Health Charter which formalises their commitment to helping employees and students get through difficulties at work and study caused by mental illness.
To date nine mental health champions have been trained across all campuses to promote the difficulties around mental health issues as well as showing students how to cope with the problems associated to it and what help and support is available.
This work is further supported through the provision of Mental Health Awareness Training seminars which are being delivered to classes across all the SERC Campuses in partnership with Action Mental Health.
South Eastern Regional College’s Human Resources Department based in Ballynahinch were nominated for ‘Commitment to Mental Health and Well-being for the Community ‘at the Action Mental Health’s Headfirst Awards which took place at W5 on Wednesday 10 October. This nomination recognised SERC’s commitment of going above and beyond, taking a whole community approach to the promotion of mental health and wellbeing through engagement of teachers and parents, guardians or key contacts of young people as well as the young people themselves.
Nurses Provide Whole Hour Support To Students.
As part of World Mental Health Week and taking time to look after your mental health, two nurses offered free and confidential advice to all students as well as a free fruit snack and refreshments. South Eastern Regional College welcomed Youth Health Advice Nurses Ruth Ewing and Anna Johnston from YMCA North Down to the Downpatrick Campus to promote ‘Whole Hour’ and the importance of self-care to the students. ‘Whole Hour’ aims to recognise and champion the importance of self-care.
