South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has welcomed continued progress to refurbish the playground in Crossgar following an arson attack in July 2015.
Ms Ritchie said: “In July 2015, extensive damage was caused to the playpark in an incident of mindless vandalism.
“As a result, children in the local area have been deprived active outdoor play in the park, for nearly seven months. It was particularly devastating as Crossgar Community Association, along with the community and political representatives, lobbied hard for the new playpark for a number of years before it was installed in early 2014.
“Following continued representations to Newry Mourne and Down District Council, I am pleased progress is now being made on replacing the structures which were damaged in the middle of last year.
“The consultation process has been undertaken regarding the favoured design for replacement and a proposal has been accepted. The Estates Department are currently finalising the tender documentation and it is hoped that the playground will be on site before the end of the financial year, although this will be dependent on some external considerations.
“I understand concerns about a replacement tower have been allayed with an agreement to keep the height to under four metres.
“This is very welcome news. I hope the park will be re-opened fully to members of the public and children as soon as possible,” added Ms Ritchie.
Rowallene Councillor Terry Andrews also welcomed the developments and said: “Due to the hard work by people in the community, local politicians and the Council we are progressing well and are on our way to getting the play park back up to standard which the local residents are looking forward to.
“So well done to everyone for their great efforts. Let’s hope that we do not see any more incidents like this again in Crossgar.”
