junior handballers had mixed fortunes on Sunday 27th in the Ulster Championships. Kevin Polly and Hugh Dornan were beaten by a strong Monaghan pairing in the U-14 doubles. This was their first taste of action at this level and the experience will certainly stand by them in the future. Niall Quinn and Sam Burns had a better day, and they have earned their place in the final against Armagh in two weeks time, after beating Cavan in a tough game. The U-16’s had a friendly with Clonduff on Sunday afternoon and it turned out to be a very worthwhile exercise. In a game of two halves due to the wind, they equipped themselves very well in the second half and their fitness level stood by them. There were some notable performances especially from Jonathan Deeny, Steafan Byrne and Frank Starkey. In the second half there was a great all round improvement with Tim Collins, Owen McEvoy, and Johnnie Bell deserving a mention. With some players missing, this was an encouraging performance against an extremely good team. Work at the Club is well under way. A new fence will be erected to block off the drain. Electronic turnstiles will be installed as will a new state of the art Public Address system. A small area on the cemetery side has been designated for terracing with an underfoot heating system. The current work will be completed by the end of March. Ticket sales for the Development draw haven’t broken any records just yet, and we would ask everyone to return the tickets they have sold immediately. The pitches still remain closed and the U-16s will train again this week on Tuesday night at Dunleath Park from 7.00PM to 8.30 PM on the all weather pitch. The seniors are still training on Sunday mornings, and the Seconds have their first fixture of the season next Sunday.
