Ards and North Down To Celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
This year, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service.
Ards and North Down Borough Council is delighted to announce its featured events to celebrate Her Majesty’s historic reign in the run up to the Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend, which takes place from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June 2022.
The UK has a long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees through beacon lighting and this will take place locally on the evening of Thursday 2 June in Bangor, Newtownards and Ballyhalbert.
The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative, created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, and this year the Council has been working with community groups across the Borough to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.
AND Borough Council marks this momentous milestone as a community, by casting minds back and sharing stories of those who have been fortunate enough to meet Her Majesty. The Council is excited to be sharing these stories in the run up to the Platinum Jubilee Weekend. A light will be shone on the Borough’s baking prowess through the AND Platinum Pudding Competition, which calls for local star bakers to produce a pudding fit for a Queen. Judging will take place on Friday 27 May, so get your whisks poised and your ovens ready. Details to follow!
The North Down Museum will be stepping back in time to celebrate Her Majesty’s reign with the Platinum Jubilee Exhibition (1 June – 31 July). It will look at the impact of the monarchy and highlight the highs and lows of each decade, both locally and internationally.
On Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June, Sea Bangor will join in the Jubilee celebrations.
Put aside your memories of Sea Bangor’s past, as this year’s festival will be transformed to capture the essence of each of the seven decades of this monarch’s historic reign. Which was your favourite era?
The Council is delighted that circa £40,000 of community grants has been awarded to make this a celebration to remember across the Borough. Platinum Jubilee Big Lunches are a wonderful way for people to celebrate together.
